In a powerful intersection of science and emotional well-being, Copperbelt University (CBU) and SAROAD recently conducted a specialized outreach event at Twatasha Secondary School titled “Astronomy for Mental Health for the Girl Child”. This initiative, which aligns with the IAU-OAD’s Flagship 2 program, uses the vastness of the cosmos as a tool for emotional grounding, resilience, and inspiration.
A Cosmic Perspective for Well-being
The core of the program is built on the “cosmic perspective”—the idea that engaging with astronomy can help individuals realize they are part of a vast, interconnected universe. For the students at Twatasha, this perspective serves as a therapeutic bridge to:
• Reduce stress and anxiety by fostering mindfulness and reflection.
• Provide emotional empowerment through scientific curiosity, especially for those living in regions facing significant socio-economic pressures.
• Promote a sense of shared humanity that extends beyond local and national borders.
Hands-on Discovery and Mentorship
The event at Twatasha Secondary School was not limited to theory; it combined STEM education with practical scientific exploration. Key activities included:
• Specialized Lectures: Sessions focused on girls in astronomy, encouraging participants to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
• Telescope Viewing: Students had the opportunity to observe the heavens firsthand using a 102mm Medea refracting telescope.
• Interactive Engagement: CBU facilitators worked closely with Twatasha students and staff to create an environment where scientific inquiry felt accessible and empowering.
Impact and Significance
By focusing specifically on the girl child, SAROAD and CBU are addressing the need for targeted mentorship and representation in STEM. This outreach encourages young women to see themselves as future innovators and researchers capable of contributing to Africa’s scientific growth.
Ultimately, the event at Twatasha Secondary School demonstrated that astronomy is more than just a “luxury” science; it is a vital tool for education, mental well-being, and societal transformation. Through the lens of a telescope, these students are not just looking at stars—they are looking at their own unlimited potential
