About Us

who we are

The Southern African Regional Office of Astronomy for Development (SAROAD) is a strategic regional node of the International Astronomical Union (IAU) Office of Astronomy for Development (OAD). Established on August 8, 2014, through an agreement between the IAU and Copperbelt University (CBU), SAROAD is hosted within the School of Mathematics and Natural Sciences in Kitwe, Zambia.
Our office serves as a central hub for coordinating astronomy-related activities across the Southern African region and among Square Kilometre Array (SKA) partner countries. We operate through a collaborative approach, working closely with the global OAD in Cape Town and other regional nodes to realize the societal benefits of astronomy.
