WHAT IS ASTRONOMY FOR MENTAL HEALTH Astronomy for Mental Health: The Cosmic Perspective for Well-being Astronomy for Mental Health is a key initiative (Flagship 2) of the IAU-OAD and SAROAD that explores how engagement with the cosmos can serve as a therapeutic and educational tool. It moves beyond scientific discovery to offer perspective, reflection, and emotional grounding. Core Benefits and Goals: • Mental Well-being: The program aims to reduce stress and anxiety, foster mindfulness, and inspire resilience and hope. • Healing Perspective: By reminding individuals that they are part of something vast, the initiative provides a “cosmic perspective” that can be deeply healing, especially in regions facing socio-economic pressures. • Social Connection: It promotes a sense of shared humanity and connection beyond borders, encouraging emotional empowerment through scientific curiosity.
SAROAD conducts guided cosmic reflection sessions and public observing nights to use the night sky as a space for mindfulness
A specific example of this work is the “Astronomy for Mental Health for the Girl Child” project. This initiative combines STEM activities with telescope viewing to provide emotional empowerment and inspiration specifically for young girls
SAROAD envisions astronomy as a tool that not only drives innovation but also supports mental well-being and transforms lives by integrating science with human development.
By highlighting our shared place in a vast universe, this initiative fosters global unity and cross-border solidarity, using scientific wonder to provide emotional strength and resilience
